The Evidence Behind Our Claims

Lavabrush’s performance and environmental claims are based on extensive testing, field research and industry validation across multiple markets.

Our work has included collaboration with four paint-brush manufacturers and two of the world’s largest paint manufacturers. We have conducted field studies involving professional painters, paint manufacturers and distributors across nine markets, as well as interviews and discussions with national painting-industry associations in Europe.

We have measured the time and volume of water used by different brush-cleaning methods. These tests also considered how variations in water pressure across European water systems affect consumption when brushes are cleaned under a running tap.

Our findings have been discussed with representatives from organisations including Nordic Swan Ecolabel, Svenskt Vatten and VA SYD. Our findings have also been compared with findings from a number of recognised studies and reports published by authorities and organisations.

The data collected across the different markets correlates closely, particularly within Europe. The results have subsequently been reviewed against practical experience from distributors and professional painters in several countries.

What the Results Show

Based on this body of evidence:

• A professional painter may use up to 200 litres of water per week when cleaning brushes using conventional methods.
• Lavabrush uses 1.5 litres of water to clean 7–15 brushes per fill.
• This can reduce water use by up to 99% compared with cleaning brushes under a running tap.
• A paint brush can be cleaned in around 30 seconds, depending on the brush, paint and condition of the tool.

The results relate to the professional cleaning of brushes used with water-based paint. Actual savings and cleaning times may vary according to working practices, water pressure, brush type, paint type and the condition of the brush.

Paint-related pollution and unnecessary water consumption are global problems, but they are also influenced by everyday working practices.

Every professional painter can contribute by changing how brushes are cleaned. Replacing repeated rinsing under running water with a controlled cleaning system can substantially reduce the amount of water used and keep paint-contaminated cleaning water contained for appropriate disposal.
